Woman granted $75,000 bail on fraud charge

A mother of five accused of converting a sum of money entrusted to her own use was on Friday placed on bail in the sum of $75,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Evelyn Moore, 45, who was entrusted by Coral Massiah with two Republic Bank cheques valued $145,759 to purchase travel tickets, is alleged to have fraudulently converted the money to her own use. She allegedly committed the offence on September 18 at Georgetown.

Moore was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of fraudulent conversion when it was read to her by the magistrate.

Attorney Deborah Backer, who represented the accused, made an application that her client be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that she had no antecedents, had a fixed address, posed no risk of flight and had been cooperating with police investigation.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey had no objection to the bail application made by the attorney. The magistrate told the parties involved that the specifics of the case will be examined at the point of trial.

Moore was ordered to return to court on November 12.
