Health Ministry, RAMS partner in Lethem surgeries

The Ministry of Health and NGO Remote Areas Medical Services (RAMS) recently performed a number of surgeries at the Lethem Hospital in Region Nine and plan to provide a number of other medical services at the hospital and in Mabaruma before month end.

Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the NGO has been conducting surgeries at the hospital. Five hysterectomies were performed and several other surgeries were scheduled last week. The RAMS team performed the operations while the ministry provided the necessary medication, blood, injections and other medical tools. Local surgical nurses were also mobilised to work with the RAMS team.

Dr Ramsaran said the team of roving doctors is robust and is boosting its services in the hinterland regions. The team of doctors comprised medical professionals from both private and public health institutions, including doctors Fawcett Jeffrey, Shoba and Neville Gobin, George Norton and Sheik Amir, and nurse Patricia Singh.

RAMS provide services which are not accessible in the hinterland regions, including dentistry, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, X- ray, general surgery, internal medicine, radiography, and ophthalmology.

According to Dr Ramsaran, the team will be visiting the Mabaruma Hospital in Region One on October 23 and 24 and the Lethem Hospital again on October 30 and 31.
