Peer educator accused of stealing colleague’s cell phone

A peer educator and counsellor attached to the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $60,000 after being accused of stealing his colleague’s cell phone.

The allegation is that on October 7 at Georgetown, Trevor Anthony Haley of 1151 Craig, East Bank Demerara stole one cell phone valued $70,000, property of Annalisa Austin.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in his address to the court said that on the day in question, the virtual complainant left her cell phone on her desk and went out for a while and  when she returned the phone was gone.

The court then heard from the prosecutor that after an investigation was conducted by the police who were called in, the woman’s phone was found on the accused. He was then arrested and charged for the offence.

The prosecution had no objections to the defendant being placed on bail. Haley was granted his pretrial liberty in the sum of $60,000. His matter was transferred to Court Ten for December 7.
