Accused bicycle thief put on $25,000 bail

A man accused of stealing another’s bicycle was yesterday placed on $25,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

The allegation is that on October 26 at Georgetown, Devon Smith of 7583 Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, stole one bicycle valued $16,000, property of Yandram Satton.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case said that on the day in question, the accused had parked his bicycle on the bridge in front of his residence and had gone into the house when the accused  passed by and rode away with it.

A report was made to the police and the defendant was eventually arrested.

When given a chance to respond, the unrepresented defendant told the court that he was innocent of the charge levelled against him.

The prosecution had no objection to the man being granted his pretrial liberty. Smith was later admitted to bail in the sum of $25,000 and his matter was transferred to Court Three for November 8.
