Sophia man remanded over Canje break-in

An 18-year-old resident of Sophia yesterday appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Court charged with break and enter and larceny.

Jomo Archer of Lot 65 Turkeyen, Sophia was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on October 27, last he forcefully entered the home of Vanessa Joseph.

Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said the school teacher secured her home at Cumberland, East Canje, and went to her place of employment. However on returning home, later that day, she discovered that a quantity of items, including a 32” plasma television, a Sony DVD, bottles of whisky, a quantity of jewels and other items valued $705,600, were missing.

A report was made at Reliance Police Station and acting on information, the prosecutor said, police arrested the defendant at an abandoned house, with the television and some of the other stolen items.

He was refused bail and remanded to prison until November 24 when he will appear at the Reliance Magistrate Court.
