Seaman chopped in Bee Hive attack

A seaman was badly chopped on Thursday night while visiting a friend at Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and up to press time last night the attacker was still on the run.

Naresh Roopwah, 30, of Annandale, ECD was admitted as a patient of the male ward of the Georgetown Hospital after undergoing several hours of surgery yesterday morning.

He sustained a deep gash which stretches from the back of his neck to his right shoulder.
When Stabroek News spoke with him yesterday afternoon, he just arrived from the recovery room after undergoing surgery. Roopwah’s shoulder and the back of his head were heavily bandaged and he was receiving saline.

Despite his discomfort, he managed to recount that sometime after 8 pm, he was at his friend’s house when the suspect rode into the yard on a bicycle and chopped him with a cutlass. Roopwah said that he was clueless as to the reason behind the chopping since he had no argument with the man, who is a resident of Bee Hive, prior to the attack.

Stabroek News was told that Roopwah works on sea but most of his friends live in Bee Hive and he would usually “hang out’ in the community.

Earlier on Thursday he loaded his boat with supplies with the intention of returning to sea today.
