City treasurer sent on leave as probe launched into kickback allegation

The City Treasurer has been sent on leave pending an investigation into an allegation of demanding kickbacks from a debt collector for RRT Enterprises.

Contacted yesterday, Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall said he had ordered an investigation into the matter following a complaint which was made to him. He said he has asked his Permanent Secretary and Keith Burrowes, who was chairman of the 2009 Commission of Enquiry into the operations of the Mayor and City Council, to investigate.

According to Mayor Hamilton Green, City Treasurer Andrew Meredith was asked to proceed on annual leave to allow for the investigations.

This newspaper contacted RRT Enterprises, but was told that a comment will be forthcoming on Monday since the boss was unavailable.
