In a press statement police said that at about 3.45 am today, following information received, “ranks of a mobile police patrol in the University of Guyana Access Road area encountered a suspicious-looking motor car without number plates.”

Police, the release said, trailed the motor car through Sophia and into the Guyhoc Park area. They subsequently came under fire from persons in the vehicle and returned fire. During the exchange of gunfire, police said, “an object was observed being thrown out of the motor car and into the nearby canal.”

The motor car subsequently stopped and the injured two men were discovered inside. The black Toyota AT 170 motor car is in police custody.
