Gun found in St Mary’s school compound

During a search yesterday afternoon for a missing iPod, teachers of the St. Mary’s Secondary School stumbled upon a gun and at least one knife hidden in the grass behind the female washroom.

Police were informed and arrived at the institution shortly after. The discovery was made after 2 pm.
Stabroek News was told that the weapon appeared to be old and might have been at the spot for some time.
A senior police officer said that as a result of the theft there was a ‘lock down” at the learning institution. The iPod this newspaper was told belonged to a teacher.

When Stabroek News arrived at the school, the gates were locked and students were standing in the compound. Several police officers, students and teachers were standing in the area where the items were found.
Ranks were observed searching that  area.

The head teacher refused to speak and instructed members of the media to leave the school compound. She advised the media to contact the Education Ministry for a comment.

One student this newspaper spoke with, said that the gun and a `Rambo knife’ were found but said he did not know how it ended up there.
This newspaper was told that several of the males from the upper forms were questioned but it is unclear if investigators were able to gather any concrete information. Classes were later dismissed for the day.
Police are continuing investigations into the matter.
