Parents shut Golden Grove Primary for second day

True to their word, parents of children at the Golden Grove Primary school locked the gates yesterday and kept their children from going to school after protesting the lack of water the day before.

The protest may have been effective since this newspaper learnt that a pump for the school has been acquired and is expected to be installed by today. Efforts however to contact Education Minister, Shaik Baksh for a comment once again proved futile yesterday.

The head of the Parent-Teachers Association for the school, Patricia Tixey yesterday told this newspaper that the parents took to protesting again and locked the gates to the school. While there were teachers, there were no students.

On Tuesday the school’s PTA body took to protesting after the school had gone five weeks without water which resulted in double sessions at the school. Lack of water has resulted in the toilets becoming dirty and students and teachers having to fetch water from a drain across the school if they want to use the toilet.

Efforts to contact the Region Four Regional Executive Officer who this newspaper was told was responsible for acquiring the pump for the school proved futile yesterday. The pump is needed to push water to overhead tanks which supply water to the washrooms.
