Tree falls and kills miner; injures three others

A tree which fell in a gold pit in the upper Barama River where four miners were working yesterday has left one dead and three injured.

The dead man was identified as Anand (only name given) of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara.
The men’s names were given as Mikey Bobb of Marlborough, who was said to be critical after sustaining injuries to his left side and head; Jason (only name given) of Cozier Canal who sustained a broken hand and Heston Boyce of Charity who sustained head injuries.

According to Commander of the Police’s E & F Division Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine an excavator was doing some work in an area located in the upper Barama River where a dredge owner has a claim. In the process of doing the work, a tree fell and four employees who were in the vicinity received injures. One man died on the scene and three others sustained injuries.

The accident was said to have occurred around 14:00 hrs yesterday.
Owner of the dredge Henry Da Silva said the dead man sustained a broken back and head injuries.
The dredge owner pointed out that the men had begun work yesterday after arriving some two days ago in the interior location identified as being between Bamboo and Panther River in the North West District. The man said that he will stand all expenses for the funeral and will also see what he can do for those injured.
Arrangements are being made for the police to visit the scene.
