AFC lauds Norris Witter as new GTUC president

The AFC has extended congratulations to newly-elected President of the Guyana Trades Union Congress Norris Witter and other members of the body and wished them success.

The AFC said in a release on Tuesday that it was pleased to note that over the four-day period of the GTUC conference “there was evidence of a sharpened national perspective of the struggles being endured by the working class in Guyana.”
As a result, the party noted, “the deliberations opened new horizons and great promise for all stakeholders.”

The party also asserted that in the context of what has become a national struggle being waged by bauxite and sugar workers, a historic challenge now confronts the GTUC and every working class oriented labour union in the country.

The AFC said further that it had placed on record “its principled position on the plight of workers both in the bauxite  and sugar industries”  and the party stands  ready “to continue  to expose the injustices, corrupt practices, and mismanagement of this PPP government.”

“We caution Guyanese against falling prey to the ‘handouts’ being doled out even as this government failed to create a vibrant economy with new jobs and real wealth for Guyanese workers,” the AFC said.

“No government should be allowed to trample on or reverse the historic gains of the working class in this country.  The tripartite approach to the resolution of workers’ issues should be honoured in both the letter and in spirit,” the opposition party concluded.
