MT Lowe remembered as humble family man

In a simple memorial service held at the St George’s Cathedral, former Queen’s College head teacher Frederick Morrison Telemachus `Telly’ Lowe was remembered as a devoted family man who was humble and always willing to help others.

Born on the 10th of June 1930, the fourth of eight siblings,

Morrison Telemachus Lowe

Lowe had earned a government scholarship to attend Queen’s College. After graduating from the school where he missed two terms, he gave service to the Berbice High School and at the Ministry of Agriculture before he was appointed Science Master at Queen’s College.

In 1953, Lowe attended a Dutch University on a three-year scholarship where he obtained his Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology, Botany and Zoology. He then went on to marry and have a family. He later accepted the appointment of Headmaster at his alma mater and some time after he was appointed Chief Education Officer. Lowe also lectured and held administrative positions at the University of Guyana.

The eulogy was read by his brother Sigismund Lowe. The deceased Lowe was said to be a member of the Lion’s Club and a friend of the St George’s Cathedral among other organisations. According to his brother, “Telly is a humble man, a gentle man, a family man always willing to be of assistance to others.”

A niece, Kathleen Dummett, in tribute to Lowe remembered that her uncle and mother shared “a special bond”. She referred to Lowe as a larger than life man with an ever-present wit. Dummett said she hoped her uncle’s life will continue to manifest itself to Guyanese wherever they are.
