Renate Alleyne was yesterday admitted to $60,000 bail, after he denied stealing a purse containing $68,400 from his former sister-in-law.
Alleyne, appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, denied the allegation that on December 11, at Georgetown, he stole the purse with the cash from the dwelling of Tikky Parks.
Alleyne, who resides at 4039 Rasville Housing Scheme, pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from a dwelling house.
In giving the facts of the case, prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that Alleyne was once Parks’ brother-in-law and had gone to the woman’s house to use her washing machine.
According to Telford, after Parks allowed him in to do his laundry, her cell phone rang and the woman turned her back to answer the call. Alleyne, it was alleged, suddenly left the house with the purse.
Telford said that a report was later made to the police and Alleyne was arrested and charged.
Alleyne told the court that he was innocent of the charge.
The magistrate initially placed him on $80,000 bail but the man pleaded with the court, explaining that he could not afford the sum granted.
After a reduction was given, Alleyne was ordered to return to court on December, 27 for statements.
