Public spirited citizens catch two jewel thieves

Two persons were victims of separate armed robberies in the city on Friday after their jewellery attracted attention of the criminal kind. But public-spirited citizens went to their rescue and handed the robbers over to the police.

A bandit was caught early Friday morning shortly after he robbed a woman of a gold chain outside the Stabroek Market.

According to a police release, the vendor, Annette Dolphin, who operates her business outside the market, was attacked around 15:00 hrs.

An alarm was raised and public-spirited citizens gave chase behind the perpetrator who discharged rounds in the air as he fled.

The culprit was later captured and pieces of the chain, a .38 snub-nose revolver along with four rounds were found in his possession.

He is in police custody assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile, Clevone Forde of Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden was attacked and robbed of his personal jewellery on Hadfield and Camp streets in a separate incident around 22.30 hrs police said.

Forde raised an alarm and again it was public-spirited citizens who apprehended the two robbers and handed them over to the police.
