Cops destroy ganja from completed drug cases

The Guyana Police Force destroyed 422,000 kilogrammes of cannabis at the incinerator on Wednesday – the total seized from drug cases made over a two-year period.

“These cases were concluded in court and as a result of which we are doing this destruction exercise today,” said Police Superintendent Errol Watts, of the Police Narcotics Branch, who was at the City Council’s Princes Street incinerator to witness the incineration.

The Government Information Agency also quoted Watts as saying that the cannabis had a value of $442,232 and the majority was seized from airport, wharfs and residences. This year, about 150 kilogrammes of cannabis and 74 kilogrammes of cocaine were seized.

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit will also be destroying cocaine early next year for matters that were tried in 2008 and 2010, resulting in persons being given custodial sentences.
