Landlord accused of knife attack on tenant

Deon Braithwaite, who is accused of attacking a tenant with knives on Christmas Day, was on Tuesday placed on bail in the sum of $25,000 after being charged with unlawful and malicious wounding.

Braithwaite, of Lot 6 D’Urban Street, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, to answer a charge of unlawfully and maliciously wounding George Barnwell on December 25. He pleaded not guilty.

In giving the facts of the case, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that Braithwaite and Barnwell live in adjoining apartments in the same building. Telford said on Christmas Day Braithwaite began hitting Barnwell’s door continually and moments later climbed over the wall separating their apartments and into Barnwell’s apartment. According to Telford, Braithwaite, who was armed with two knives, began chopping Barnwell about the body.

Attorney Vic Puran, who represented Braithwaite, told the court that his client is the owner of the property and that Barnwell was not paying his rent. He said Braithwaite was innocent of the charge and requested reasonable bail.

Telford, however, objected, saying that the parties live in proximity to each other and there is a likelihood that Braithwaite may try to harm Barnwell again.

The magistrate subsequently granted Braithwaite bail on the condition that he not interfere with Barnwell. The case has been transferred to Court Six for January 4.
