Sister’s man shot after robbing insurance broker

A bandit is currently under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after he attempted to rob a businessman of a laptop and $1 million.

Director of Abdool & Abdool Insurance Broker & Financial Consultant Peter Abdool was walking along Robb Street on Wednesday night when he was attacked by Rodwell Leon.

In a press statement issued yesterday, police said that Leon, 33, of Sister’s Village, West Bank Demerara, snatched a bag from the businessman. The bag, according to police, contained a Sony laptop, $1 million in cash and a quantity of documents.

The incident occurred at about 6.45 pm, after Abdool left his office and was walking along Robb Street. Police said he was confronted by Leon, who snatched his bag and then fled east along Robb Street.

Abdool, who is a licensed firearm holder, discharged two rounds at the fleeing Leon but did not injure the man. However, a police patrol which was in the area at the time, responded and chased after the perpetrator. It was during the chase that Leon was shot to the right leg by police.

The injured bandit was then arrested and the bag containing the valuables was recovered. Leon was then taken to the GPH for medical attention. He was treated and later admitted to the Male Surgical Ward. Leon remained under police guard at the medical institution up to late yesterday afternoon.
