Grenada gas leak
Grenada’s Water and Sewerage Authority is investigating a chlorine leak in a small community in the north eastern town of Grenville.

A number of people had to run away from their homes on Sunday afternoon due to a large gas leak.

Authorities say 18 people were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of exposure to chlorine gas.

Most were treated and discharged.
Officials began excavating the site on Monday where the gas was leaking.
It came from tanks buried about seven feet deep over 20 years ago.
Questions are being asked about why people were allowed to stay on the land.

Clear-up begins
Bermudans spent much of yesterday clearing up after Hurricane Igor battered the island with ferocious winds and rains on Sunday, causing huge power outages but no loss of life.

There had been fears that the category one storm would cause as much damage as Fabian, the last powerful hurricane to make landfall in the British overseas territory in 2003.

Over 20,000 homes and businesses are still without electricity and Bermuda’s power company, Belco said it is working to restore services for all it’s customers.

Last week, the high surf kicked up by Igor swept two people out to sea in the Caribbean – one in Puerto Rico and another in the US Virgin Islands.

World challenged on MDGs
The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, has warned world leaders not to use the economic downturn as an excuse for missing targets on reducing poverty.

At a summit in New York to review the Millennium Development Goals, he said they could still be achieved by the target date of 2015, but that progress was fragile.

Ten years ago world leaders pledged to tackle poverty, disease, hunger and inequalities, and committed themselves to specific goals.
But with only five years left for the United Nations to reach its Millennium Deve-lopment Goals, few believe the goals can be achieved by the deadline date of 2015.

World leaders, including delegates from the Caribbean, are in New York for an update on the MDG’s where they are expected to set further targets to reduce global poverty.

Speaking ahead of the summit, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said the global financial crisis had affected development projects worldwide.
