Richard Ishmael Secondary tops impromptu contest

Richard Ishmael Secondary School yesterday emerged winners of the GBTI Annual Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speech Competition. They beat President’s College by six points.

At the end of the competition they emerged with 664 points compared to President’s College’s 658 points. 

Team leader of the winning Richard Ishmael team Lewins Langelliers collects the first place trophy from Minister of Culture Dr. Frank Anthony in the presence of Suella Forde and Best Speaker Loreal Bumbury.

Loreal Bumbury of Richard Ishmael copped the Best Speaker prize for her presentation on the topic “Littering”. In her speech, she advocated that tougher measures to be put in place to curb littering in Georgetown.

Nadeen Louis from the School of the Nations emerged winner of the Excellent Speaker competition.  This competition drew the top four winners in the Best Speaker category and pitted them against each other. Louis was confident and eloquent in her delivery on the topic “Children learn from what they live in”.

Second place winner Nyamcheya Griffith of Bishops’ High School was equally outstanding in her delivery on the topic “Georgetown can be a better capital city.”

President’s College was represented by Christina Richardson, Jaunita Beejaima and Vonette Peters. The Richard Ishmael team comprised Lewins Langelliers, Suella Forde and Loreal Bumbury.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony in brief remarks lauded the role of teachers in the preparation of the competitors.  He said the role of the teacher often goes unmentioned.

While thanking the bank for their role in holding the competition which he said, gives young people an opportunity to express themselves, he asked them to consider broadening the base so that more schools could be part of it.

Sixteen schools took part in this year’s competition.  It is geared towards assisting young people in developing their communicative and creative potential and to improve their self confidence and ability to think on their feet.
