Albouystown man granted $1.5M bail in bogus land sale case

A man was yesterday granted $1.5M bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer charges relating to forging a transport and selling the said plot of land to another.

When Ahmad Ally, 36, of 30 Albouys Street, Albouystown appeared in court, he was read three charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, uttering a forged document and obtaining money by false pretence.  The accused who was not required to plead to the charges was represented by attorney Vic Puran.

It is alleged that Ally between April 23, 2001 and January 29, 2010, together with person(s) conspired to forge one transport purporting to show that he was the transported owner of a plot of land at Turkeyen and it was issued by the Registrar of Deeds knowing same to be false.

It is also alleged on January 29 with intent to defraud he uttered to Tarachand Balgobin a forged document, to wit a transport to show that it was genuine knowing same to be forged.

It is further alleged that between January 21 and 29, he obtained the sum of $4.5M from Shanti Devi Balgobin by falsely pretending to be the transported owner of a plot of land at Turkeyen and was in a position to sell it knowing same to be false.

Puran said that Ally did purchase the plot of land and did go through the legal processes to obtain his transport. Ally said that the property was sold to him by someone named “Stephen”.  In the circumstances, Puran said that Ally would be willing to pay restitution to Balgobin.  He asked for reasonable bail to be granted so that he might be in a position to raise the sum.

Balgobin said that he could not make a decision right away on the restitution.  He said that when he checked the Deeds Registry, he was told that the transport was a forgery.  He alleged that the address provided by Ally was also a forged one. When he checked out the address, he was told that Ally never lived there.

He further disclosed to the court that Ally was apprehended before he could board a plane to Paramaribo. He said it took the police three days to track Ally down.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that he had received no advice from the DPP but asked for substantial bail to be granted.

Ally was then granted bail and the matter put down for report on June 8.
