Reliance cops save barrack room from fire

Quick action by alert ranks of the Reliance Police Station, at East Canje averted major losses after a fire erupted in their barrack room early yesterday morning.

The fire, suspected to be electrical in origin, was detected around 8:45 am. Reports are that the ranks were in the compound of the station when they observed smoke emitting from the upper south-eastern section of the building and they raised an alarm.
They quickly formed a bucket brigade and averted what could have been a major disaster.

Stabroek News learnt that two mattresses were razed by the fire along with a quantity of clothing.

A television set and other appliances and utensils were also destroyed while the walls were badly scorched.

Two fire tenders from the Guyana Fire Service and GuySuCo’s Rose Hall Estate responded but by the time they got to the scene ranks had already put out the fire. Police, in a release, said that the fire “resulted in minor damage as a wall in the barrack room on the upper flat was scorched.

The fire was quickly extinguished by alert police ranks on duty at the station at the time.” The release said too that the fire “may be electrical in origin as it was observed shortly after electrical power was restored to the building following a period of power outage.”

Meanwhile residents told this newspaper that the Canje area was stricken with constant blackout for the past two days.
