Corentyne burglar jailed for five years

Anil Kumar Seetaram, called “Black Shirt,” was sentenced to a total of five years in prison when he appeared at the No. 58 Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, to answer charges of break and enter and larceny.

Seetaram, 32, of No. 60 Village, Corentyne admitted to breaking into a supermarket belonging to Ramjit Singh at No. 64 Village earlier this month and carting off groceries and other articles valued $379,000. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment for the offence. He was also given a further a one year jail term for breaking into the storeroom of another resident between September 5 and September 6 and stealing three Stihl motor blowers worth $354,000. Additionally, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment for stealing 15 ducks belonging to Chandrawattie Deosarran of No. 64 Village.  The sentences will run consecutively.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that Singh had secured his supermarket and went to bed. The next morning, he found the northern door open and upon checking discovered the articles missing. In the case of the storeroom, the owner noticed that a padlock on his door was wrenched open and that the items were gone.

Both men made separate reports to the police and Seetaram was subsequently arrested at his home. He later told police that he sold the items. One of the motor blowers has since been recovered.
