Tropical Storm Tomas yesterday turned into Hurricane Tomas wreaking havoc in Barbados, St Lucia and St Vincent. (See story on page 5) While the severe weather patterns caused no significant adverse effects here yesterday, the local hydromet office says that residents on the coast should still be on the look out for thunderstorms and strong winds.
While Guyana is not directly within the projected path of the hurricane, the hydromet office said thunderstorms with gusty winds and choppy seas are likely within the next 12 hours along the coast. “Wave heights may range between 2 to 3 feet in open waters,” the statement said.
According to the hydromet office, Regions One (Barima/Waini), Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) and Region Three (Essequibo Islands/ West Demerara) are the areas most likely to be affected by any adverse weather.
Residents in Regions (Barima/Waini) One and Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) told Stabroek News that the skies were overcast for most of yesterday. A resident of Mabaruma in Region One told this newspaper that there was some amount of rain and thunder yesterday afternoon but that this “was nothing drastic.”
