Delta denies rumours of pull out

Delta Airlines Sales Manager Junior Horatio has dismissed rumours that the airline is pulling out of Guyana, the Government Information Agency (GINA) has reported.

Horatio told GINA that from next year the company plans to improve its investment in Guyana as Guyanese have been very supportive and have indicated that they are impressed with the service.

He also announced that the airline will have daily flights to and from New York to cater for the increasing number of passengers travelling during the holiday season. Normally, the airline provides three flights weekly to the US using a 757 aircraft. However, during the Christmas season the company will be using a 767 aircraft to accommodate more passengers.

Horatio was also quoted as saying that the company has a special Christmas fare for persons desirous of visiting relatives in the US for the holidays. Travel agents will also be rewarded based on the number of tickets they sell.

Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad met with Horatio on Thursday and said he was happy that Delta has responded to the Guyanese market and has been cooperating with the government to provide airlift to and from Guyana.

The minister also disclosed that another airline, Jet Blue, is exploring the possibility of setting up business here to provide direct flights from New York, St. Lucia and Barbados.  The airline currently serves Jamaica, Barbados and St. Lucia.

And Dutch Antillean Airlines (ALM) is also showing an interest in bringing its service to Guyana. Prashad said that the airline currently operates from Amsterdam to Paramaribo and has expressed an interest in flying from Amsterdam to Paramaribo to Georgetown and then return to Amsterdam.
