Red Thread group did not urge women in abusive situations to run away

We refer to a report in the Guyana Times of March 30, page 3, captioned “‘Run away” – Red Thread urges abused women.’ The two women from the Red Thread Domestic Violence Survivors Self-Help Group who visited Ms Trady Williams at the hospital are the signatories to this letter. The GT reporter never asked us for a comment, and we did not offer her one.  There was a woman visitor there who was saying that all women who are in abusive situations should run away, but she was not with us. Our visit to Ms Williams was to offer our support, and to inform her about our group. Generally, our advice to women who are experiencing violence begins with advising reports to the police and using the protections of the Domestic Violence Act. The advice does not include women running anywhere.

Yours faithfully,
