GRA should be congratulated for surpassing revenue collection estimates

Dear Editor,
I do hope I am not too late in complimenting the Guyana Revenue Authority for surpassing the 2009 revenue collection estimates of $86.4B, which is a 10% increase over last year’s collection. Despite the negative news about the organization, the hard-working Commissioner-General and his staff should be congratulated for the efforts made to reach and surpass the target set in 2009.

Because of the amount collected the government is able to provide increases in salaries for public servants, build and maintain roads; schools, health clinics, hospitals, sea defences, and other infrastructure, which will enhance the government’s ability to improve the quality of life of all citizens, regardless of race, colour or creed. There is no doubt that the Commissioner-General and his staff  have fearlessly and impartially brought many others into the tax net, such as farmers, vendors, professionals and others.

Paying taxes is contributing to the development of the country, and all Guyanese regardless of political affiliation should do their part to co-operate in the national interest.
Yours faithfully
Peter Fraser
