I was both surprised and saddened when the media released a statement issued by the General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union (GLU), Mr Carvil Duncan on behalf of this institution called FITUG, that the movement will be honouring Hubert N Critchlow and Dr Cheddi Jagan.
What a travesty. I have honoured Dr Jagan in another context, but any true trade union movement on May Day should remember and pay homage to our solid trade union icons – those who in season and out of season stayed the course in the interest of workers.
We need remind the organization of Ayube Edun, Joseph H Pollydore, Gussie Agard, Basil Blair, Richard Ishmael, Cecil Cambridge, Ashton Chase, Jane Phillips-Gay, Harry Lall, Andrew Jackson and a host of others we should remember on the workers’ day.
If we wish on May Day to honour the political union leaders, have they forgotten Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham who headed the GLU for several years? Some folks have no sense of shame or history. Let justice and the truth prevail if we are to establish a wholesome society.
