A third force can sometimes hold the balance of power

Dear Editor,
The British elections have resulted in a hung parliament and the suitors, Labour and the Conservatives, are looking for a marriage of convenience but there would need to be a pre-nuptial agreement with the Liberals.

The eleventh hour courtship is between suitors and would-be betrothed who have no lasting love for each other. Major differences separate them, especially constitutional electoral reform which the Lib Dems would like. Had that been in place it would have given them more seats according to a proportional representation. Add to all of this the country’s deficit and the Greece debt crisis, which are causing the markets to react nervously.

The elections have demonstrated that a third force can at times hold the balance of power. Time is running out and I trust that the British make a sensible decision.

Yours faithfully,
VO Patrick
