Water meter boxes were installed to prevent tampering

Dear Editor,

Guyana Water Incorporated wishes to respond to a letter by Mr Robin Bynoe in SN, dated Friday, May 7 and titled ‘Consumers should be able to see the readings on their water meters.’  Firstly, we wish to advise that due to the prevalence of customers tampering with water meters, meter boxes were implemented.  These are also meant to protect the meter from weather damage and animals from stepping on the device.

Customers can view their meter readings when GWI meter readers visit their premises.  Customers are encouraged to note the amount indicated on the meter and ensure it corresponds with the reading indicated on their water service bill.  All GWI meter readers are mandated to allow customers to view their meter dials when this is requested.  Customers can make contact with their local GWI locations to ascertain when meter reading exercises will be conducted in their vicinity.

GWI wishes to remind all customers that meters are essential devices used for the accurate measurement of water consumption.  Anyone found tampering with a service meter or any GWI apparatus will be penalized in accordance with the Water & Sewerage Act, 2002.

An informative feature on metering and its benefits can be accessed via our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/everydropcounts
