Hundreds of eye patients have not been denied access to free medication

Dear Editor,

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corpora-tion is responding to a letter written to the Editor in the Friday, May 14, 2010 edition of the Stabroek News captioned, ‘Old age pensioners are suffering because they are now denied free eye medication at the GPH’.

Management wishes to state that the statement made regarding GPH, “Hundreds of patients who attended the Eye Clinic at the GPH to access free medication are now denied this privilege for whatever reason…,” is completely erroneous and misleading. Mr. Davidson’s case is one reported case of patient dissatisfaction at the Eye Clinic for the year 2010. His experience was unfortunate; however his statement was slanderously exaggerated.

At the time of Mr. Davidson’s incident, the hospital still had a supply of this drug at its main bond and the pharmacy staff was in the process of having the drug transferred to GPHC’s pharmacy; however this was not communicated to the patient. Management admits that there was a communication lapse between the patient and the pharmacy staff, who should have advised the patient to return the following day to have his prescription filled. Management has investigated this matter and is taking steps to ensure that an incident of this nature does not recur.

Further, all glaucoma patients are advised that the hospital is in full stock of the Timolol drug and any patient who was advised otherwise should come in and have their prescriptions dispensed.
Yours faithfully,
