Good news that Guyana will have four or five slots in the Youth Olympics

Dear Editor,

Toolsie Persaud Limited did extremely well in extending financial support to potential track star, Kenneth Semple, which will go towards a two months training stint in Trinidad and Tobago at an elite camp which produced medalists for T&T during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Kenneth Semple should embrace this opportunity for many would only be able to dream of such an opportunity.

I was elated to read that the Golden Arrowhead had been allotted four or five spots in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games slated for August in Singapore. I would be so happy if accomplished regional swimming ace Stephenson made the qualifying timings and made up the five to represent Guyana.

Chavez Ageday, Jevina Straker, Henk Lowe and Adeille Roshuvel must expect fierce competition from their global counterparts. They must make sacrifices to undertake practise sessions on a daily basis; meditation is good for the body and mind; spiritual guidance is also important; and a healthy diet is a priority.

The last time I checked, Giftland had DVDs on the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the 2004 Athens Olympics, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2009 World Championships and the 2009 Zurich Games. Our sports persons should make an effort to get hold of copies, because I believe they will give an insight into the techniques and speed of senior accomplished Olympians.

An interesting 200m women’s match-up will take place at the Adidas Grand Prix slated for June 12, 2010 between my US queen Allyson Felix and Jamaican sensation Veronica Campbell Brown. Of course, Allyson Felix is one of my heartbeats of sports, and I am rooting for her even though I will have to read about the results.
Yours faithfully,
T Pemberton
