Creating a spirit of self-help was one of Burnham’s more enduring achievements

Dear Editor,
In restoring Georgetown’s former beauty not all actions have to be centrally organized and directed. In some instances citizen groups in partnership with business entities can combine their efforts and resources to improve their own environment. This type of self-help initiative should be encouraged again and rewarded in imaginative ways.

During the Burnham years self-help became a national pastime and many parts of the capital were rendered attractive by this type of collective effort.

The creation of a spirit of self-help in community life had to be one of Burnham’s more enduring achievements.

Yours faithfully,
F Hamley Case
