Reflections on 2010

Dear Editor,

As 2010 comes to a close here are a few reflections past and present:

a. There is the removal of the lamp post and street lamp from Marigold and Casuarina Streets, Roxanne Burnham Gardens by employees of a reputable electrical firm, during the upgrading of the system.

b. There is the failure of central government and the city council to have the alleyways cleaned, and repair to the streets in Roxanne Burnham Gardens done.

c. There are the inadequate street lights in Roxanne Burnham Gardens and other communities, compared to the proliferation of well maintained ones on Mandela Avenue, and major routes for international conferences;

d. Taking a page from Pharonic history, the city council has decided that each corpse buried in Le Repentir, is given a mound of garbage to accompany him or her during the journey to the after life.

e. The sporadic desilting of the drains in Water and Regent Street is indeed pathetic. See the lack of protective clothing for the workers, and the absence of bottled water for their consumption.

f. The National Trust is always devoid of funds to assist in the repair or preservation of non-government historical heritage buildings. See St Peter’s Anglican Church, and have a look at the home of our late poet laureate, Martin Carter.

g. The colours have been unified, however, the manners and road discipline of those HB drivers are sadly lacking, presenting a clear and present danger to would-be tourists.

h. Check out the tenement yards in Werk-en-Rust, Albouystown and other such areas after a heavy rainfall – a pig’s delight.

i. See the advertisement for Chlorosol. Are we to understand that the water from the treatment plants needs to be treated before consumption?

j. A beautiful monument at the entrance to the Promenade Gardens – what has become of the wrought iron chairs that once graced that area?

l. What has happened to the Regimental Colour of the British Guiana Volunteer Force, that was laid up in St George’s Cathedral in 1966(?) on the disbandment of that unit?

m. Remember that scroll presented to the Guyana Defence Force by the then Mayor and  Councillors of the city of Georgetown, granting the GDF permission to enter the said city, with flags unfurled, bayonets fixed and drums beating?

n. Madoff and Stanford are in jail. Wesley Snipes is going to jail for Xmas. November 2010, like the Ides of March has come and gone, but the big boys who obtained big loans from Globe Trust and Investment Company Limited and have refused to repay their loans continue to roam free; such is Guyanese justice.

Yours faithfully,
