Teachers involved in the holidays remediation programme have now been paid

Dear Editor,

It is with pleasure that I inform you that primary and secondary school teachers in Berbice who participated in the National Remediation Programme 2010 with low achievers in English and Mathematics during the summer holidays have been paid.
The payments came after several months of speculation and much resentment from teachers who worked during the programme.

After several letters to this newspaper, the last of which was sent by SN to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and reports on a Berbice TV newscast, the payment was finally made on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Region 6 Education Department.

It was said that Regional Education Officer Mrs Shafiran Bhajan also went to Georgetown to raise the matter with the Minister.

The discussions bore fruit and a pay sheet pre-signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Pulander Kandhi and Assistant Chief Education Officer, Ms Melcita Bovell, titled ‘Personal Emoluments Claim’ was prepared and signed by each teacher who participated in the programme. Primary teachers were paid with cheques. Each teacher received an amount of $30,000.

Yours faithfully,
Leon Suseran
