T&T’s batting collapse after Khan’s five-star spell

When play started 1-1/4 hours later than scheduled, Khan snared five wickets for 96 runs from 25.5 overs, as Guyana were dismissed for 273, replying to T&T’s first innings total of 416, in the match featuring the experimental pink cricket ball.

T&T had a shaky start to their second innings, when first-innings century-maker Lendl Simmons was caught behind off Brandon Bess for a duck, and Justin Guillen was adjudged lbw to Assad Fudadin for 16.

T&T were 39 for two at tea, but captain Daren Ganga scored 65 and Jason Mohammed supported with 44 to restore stability in a stand of 92 for the third wicket.

But in the twinkling of an eye, T&T plunged from the comfort of 131 for two to 139 for seven, as Deonarine weaved his spell and the batsmen employed questionable tactics.

Mohammed was caught at short-leg off Deonarine to precipitate the collapse that lasted all of five minutes.

Sherwin Ganga was run out for one, when he sacrificed his wicket for his elder sibling, after they were both stranded in the same crease, and Dave Mohammed was lbw to Veerasammy Permaul for a duck without addition to the total to leave T&T 136 for five.

Ravi Rampaul was then caught at mid-off off Deonarine for three, and captain Ganga himself succumbed when he was caught at short leg off the same bowler.

It was a dramatic turn of events, after T&T had remained in such total control for most of the match and, indeed, a day touched by inclement weather.

The 25-year-old Khan, who wears a mop-like rock star hairstyle and shaggy beard, bowls quick leg-breaks and top-spinners.

He was preferred in the attack to the more experienced Dave Mohammed and Amit Jaggernauth, and he proved his point.

When the Guyanese continued from 171 for four, they were quickly reduced to 184 for six with Deonarine smartly taken at first slip off Ravi Rampaul for 43, and in the next over, Khan had Vishaul Singh also also taken at slip for 24.

Guyana reached 212 for six at lunch, and following the interval, Derwin Christian and Esuan Crandon gave the innings a late boost when they completed a stand of 71 for the seventh wicket.

Sherwin Ganga made the breakthrough, when he had Christian caught at short leg for 41, and the Guyana innings went into swift decline with Khan taking the last three scalps – including Crandon for 40 – as Guyana lost their last four wickets for 18 runs in 20 minutes.

This is Guyana’s first match of this year’s competition, but T&T are looking to rebound from a 151-run defeat in the opening round in Jamaica, where they were crushed by the Combined Campuses & Colleges in a rain-affected match at Jarrett Park.
