GHB executives set to return to office

Most of the executive members are likely to be returned to office when the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) holds its annual general meeting (AGM) this evening at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion.

Sources close to the GHB have indicated that most of the executive members are willing to serve again and are likely to be returned to their positions.

Incumbent president Philip Fernandes told Stabroek Sport recently that he was prepared to serve another term.

Fernandes, a business executive, has been at the helm for the past nine years but had stepped down for one year during that period.

He had been instrumental in launching the popular Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival now in its sixth year, while Guyana men’s and women’s teams returned to international competition following their participation in the Caribbean Hockey Cup in Trinidad and Tobago two years ago.

The current members of the executive are vice presidents Ivor Thompson and Rawl Davson, long serving secretary Gregory Sills, treasurer Devin Hooper, assistant secretary/treasurer Tricia Fiedtkou and committee members Avonda James and Hubert Forrester.

Sills disclosed that the GHB will be looking to send a team to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico in July, while greater emphasis will be placed on the board’s Junior Development programme in 2010.

The last time Guyana sent a national team to the CAC games was in that Caribbean island back in 1993.

Sills said the board had kick-started its junior programme last year with St. Joseph’s High, Marian Academy, Mae’s Secondary and North Ruimveldt Multilateral being the schools benefiting from the training.

He said that many of the students from these schools are now playing at club level.

“This year we plan to target Queen’s College, Bishops’ High and School of the Nations as well as schools in Region Three with, support of Western Dragons of West Demerara,” he declared.

High on the agenda at this evening’s meeting will be the reports of the president, secretary and treasurer in addition to the election of office bearers.
