Former Caribbean champion bounced from Bounty Farm handicap squash tourney

Former Caribbean squash champion Alexander Arjoon was one of a number of national players to be eliminated after the opening night action of this year’s Bounty Farm handicap tournament at the Georgetown Club’s courts.

Arjoon joined Deje Dias, Keisha Jeffrey and British High Commissioner to Guyana, Fraser Wheeler, as the Open category players who were unable to make it to the next round Tuesday night.

Arjoon, -25, found the handicap too steep and lost to Joe Meckdeci (+6) -9/15, 11/15, -6/15.

Jeffrey (+2) also found the going tough against Joshua Abdool (+8) and bowed out 9/15, 9/15.

Wheeler (+13) went under to Allan Downes (+6)14/15, 8/15, 14/15.

Young Nyron Joseph (+8), who showed some frustration at points in his game returned to defeat Brian Yong (+10) 11/15, 17/16, 15/12 while

Andrew Arjoon (+10) got the better of Dias (-15) 15/-6, 15/-10.

National player Regan Pollard (-25) remains the most negatively handicapped player in the tournament after gaining a walkover from Mary Fung-A-Fat.

In the Category A competition Jamal Douglas (+10) beat Dominique Noel (+8) 15/13, 15/11 and Ben Mekdeci (-8) comfortably disposed of Alexander Cheeks (-2) 15/3, 15/8.

Stefan John (+8) made light work of Kristina Cheeks (0) to record a 15/6, 15/5 victory.

Jason Van Dyk, with a handicap of -15, fought hard to get the better of Alexandra Phang with a positive 10 handicap with scores of 15/13, 17/14.

Jonathan Antczak fought from a -8 handicap to defeat Keith Lowenfield, who went in to the match with a +8 advantage 15/10, 15/14.

Julio van Lange (+8) took care of Ryan Whitehead (-8) in straight sets to record a 15/-3 15/4 victory while Taylor Fernandes and Patrick Fraser received walkovers from Randy Hope and Dylan Walker respectively.

The tournament, the Guyana Squash Association’s first for the year, continued last night with the highlight being the showdown between siblings and junior national players Ashley and Jason Ray Khalil.
