Rookie leg-spinner to face Windies in final ODI

MELBOURNE, Australia, CMC – Twenty-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder Steven Smith is set to make his 50-over international debut for Australia after being called up for the final one-day match against West Indies.

Smith, who bowls right-arm and can bat high up the order, has been given a run with the series already wrapped up at 3-0 following the fourth One-Day International on Sunday in Brisbane.

He will replace off-spinner Nathan Hauritz who is the latest player to be rested as Cricket Australia has continued to enforce their policy of managed workloads.

“With the series won, the national selection panel has decided to give Mike Hussey and Nathan Hauritz the final match of the series off in order to prepare for the upcoming tour of New Zealand,” said selection chairman Andrew Hilditch.
