Toucan Industries Mash Junior Skill Level Tournament…Caribbean U15 champ, Khalil, Dias all impressive on second night

National racquet wielders Jason Ray Khalil, Victoria Arjoon and Deje Dias all turned in impressive performances on the second night of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Toucan Industries sponsored junior skill level Mashramani tournament at the Georgetown Courts.

Victoria Arjoon

Playing in the final match of the evening, Khalil upstaged the skillful Oliver Kear-Downes with a brilliant come-from-behind victory.

Downes, coming off of a first night win over Nyron Joseph, seemed poised to make it two in a row as he fired his racquet to an early 6-2 lead.

Downes was caught by Khalil when the scores were on eight but benefited from some loose play from Khalil and went on to win the first set 14-12.

The second set saw Downes playing as though he was battling for his life as he chopped and cut through some beautiful shots to win 11-2.

A little pep talk from his father saw Khalil coming out back red-hot and became too much for Downes to handle.

He played some soft, some hard off the wall and most of the times, Downes could not get to the shots on time and he lost the third set 8-11.

Khalil played his way to win the other two games through some text book squash shots picking up the final game, in a convincing manner; 11-4.

Caribbean U15 champion Arjoon in her clash with Steven Xavier hurried her way to a 14-12, 11-9 win in the first two sets.

Deje Dias

Xavier held his own and came back to win the third set 11-4.

But the end result was evident from the start of the fourth game and Arjoon easily took it in style winning 11-6.

Meanwhile Dias chalked up his second win of the contest when he stopped Joseph in straight sets, 11-6, 11-4 and 11-8.
