Chanderpaul leads Guyana to first innings lead

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 89, as Guyana, replying to Leeward Islands’ first innings total of 192, were 266 for nine at the close on the second day of their sixth round match at the National Cricket Centre.

Chanderpaul showed no signs of the thumb injury he sustained last December in the Test series against Australia with a perfect exhibition of disciplined batting  against the opposition bowling attack.

The left-hander has struck nine boundaries from 251 balls in close to 5-1/2 hours at the crease.

Chanderpaul shared in two important partnerships that gave his team a slight advantage in the encounter.

He featured in a fourth-wicket stand of 66 with Assad Fudadin, who contributed 45 scored from 141 balls in just over 2-1/2 hours and included seven fours.

Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian also made 45 off 81 balls in two hours with seven fours and shared in a fifth-wicket stand of 92 with Chanderpaul.

Leading bowler for the Leewards was spinner Anthony Martin, who bagged four for 55 from 30 overs.

There were two wickets apiece for pacer Brent Defreitas two for 45 from 11 overs, and spinner Justin Athanaze two for 55 from 32 overs.

Earlier, Guyana resumed on their overnight position of 45 for two, and the pair pushed the score to 64 before Singh had his stumps shattered by Defreitas for 40.

Chanderpaul then partnered Fudadin, and both batsmen showed their intention of occupying the crease for long periods.

They went to lunch nicely poised for first innings lead on 120 for three, with Fudadin on 36 and Chanderpaul 21.

After the break, Fudadin quickly perished for 45 with the total on 130, caught by Dennis Browne from Martin’s bowling.

Chanderpaul and Christian repaired the damage and together thwarted the efforts of the Leewards’ attack.

Christian was dismissed, after the tea break caught and bowled by Martin and the Guyanese were reduced to 225 for five.

His dismissal triggered off a mini-collapse with Esaun Crandon for nought, Zaheer Mohammed for two, Veerasammy Permaul for eight, and Davendra Bishoo for zero offering no resistance.
