-Oscar Shew Memorial TT competition
Former Caribbean U-15 boys singles champion Nigel Bryan and national player Chelsea Edghill were adjudged the most outstanding racquet wielders when the Oscar Shew Memorial two-day table tennis tournament ended at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday.
Bryan carted off the Open U-21 and boys’ U-18 titles while Edghill won the girls’ U-13 and U-15 titles.
In the Open U-21 final Bryan defeated Joel Alleyne 3-1.
He won the first two games easily 11-7, 11-5 but Alleyne looked as if he would make a fist of it with an 11-8 win before Bryan roared back to win the match with an 11-3 triumph in the fourth game.
In the third place playoff, Dwayne Gibson defeated Darwn Walcott 9-11, 11-7, 119, 11-6.
Bryan then added the boys”U-18 title to his collection with a 3-1 win over Denzel Duff. Bryan had earlier received a scare from Jamaal Duff who led him by two games to one before Bryan rorade back to win the hotly contested tie 3-2. Bryan then reached the final by defeating Samuel Fraser 3-0 while Duff got past Joseph Johnson 3-1.
Johnson placed third and Fraser fourth.
Edghill took the girls’ 13 years and under title from Priscilla Greaves and Tiara Naraine respectively and won the girls’ 15 years and under title by defeating Akecia Nedd in the final with Greaves taking the third position.
Edghill, though, was denied a third title when she lost to Adielle Rosheuvel in the girls 18 years and under final.
Rosheuvel won 11-7, 11-7, 11-8. Nedd took the third position with a 13-11, 11-6, 11-6 triumph over Greaves.
Samuel Fraser won the boys’ 15 years and under final with a 3-1 win over Jamaal Duff.
Fraser won 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, and 20-18.
Denzel Duff, who was seeded number four, took third place after defeating number two seed Dillon Mahadeo 10-12, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9.
Stephan Patoir, who was surprisingly seeded number three behind Mahadeo and number one seed Fraser, lost to Denzel Duff in the quarter finals.
All three players, Patoir, Fraser and Denzel Duff, all national Under-15 players and members of the team to the Caribbean Championships last year in St Kitts where Mahadeo was the fourth ranked player, somehow found themselves in the top half of the draw while the bottom half included Jamaal Duff, Mahadeo, Alistair Park, Joseph Johnson and Elishaba Johnson.
Jamaal Duff won the boys’13 by defeating Joseph Johnson 11-5, 13-11 and 11-4. In the semi-finals, Duff defeated Kyle Edghill 11-5, 11-6, 11-1 while Joseph won the battle of the Johnsons by defeating Elishaba 12-10, 11-4, 12-10.
In the 10 years and under boys’ category, Amit Mookram was first with rising stars Khalil Ninvalle and seven year-old Jeremy Singh, son of former national player Lisa Lewis, placing second and third respectively.
