Barbados stroll to easy win over Guyana

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Barbados began their junior Three Nations Caribbean Men’s Hockey tournament with a resounding 6-1 triumph over Guyana at the National Hockey Centre in Tacarigua Wednesday.

The Bajan boys went in at the interval leading 4-0 before completing the rout as the Guyanese got the consolation goal at the death.

Akeem Rudder enjoyed a hat-trick as he converted off a penalty corner in the fourth minute, then added second half field goals in the 43rd and 46th minutes.

His captain Shakheel Wharton got a brace as his field goals came in the 15th and 23rd minutes while the other goal came from Che Roach in the 28th. Mark Ayen got the lone Guyana goal in the 67th.

The result was the second loss for the Guyana team as they went under to hosts Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 in another match played earlier in the day.

Jamarri Assanah opened the scoring in the 25th for T&T and two minutes later, Aroydy Branford coverted a penalty corner to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

Five minutes later, Branford was on target again and Kevin Melville sealed the sweep with his field goal in the 70th minute as the time horn sounded.
