Guyana on the verge of title after brushing aside Barbados

At Munroe Road Recreation Ground, the unbeaten Guyana stayed on course for their first title 12 years when they carved out an impressive 10-wicket victory in a rain-affected match.

Barbados batted first and chalked up 155 for eight in 50 overs with skipper Jameel Stuart and Jonathan Drakes each scoring 24.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai (2-23) and right-arm leg-spinner Shawn Perreira (2-31) had two wickets apiece.

Set a revised target of 75 in 24 overs after rain intervened, Guyana achieved victory in the 17th over without losing a wicket.

Brian Sattaur saw his side to victory with a solid, unbeaten 33 while Romario De Jonge scored 25.

If Guyana extend their unbeaten streak by overcoming Trinidad and Tobago at the Inshan Ali Park in the final round on Sunday, Guyana will lift the title to add to their previous triumphs in 1998 and 1999.

Should Guyana slip up, Jamaica put themselves in with an outside chance of snatching the title when they crushed T&T by 81 runs at Wilson Road.

Asked to take first strike by Trinidad and Tobago skipper Vikash Mohan, the Jamaicans piled up an impressive 249 off 49.4 overs before dismissing their opposition for a paltry 168 off 43 overs.

They were given a flying start by openers Aldane Thomas and Tristan Coleman (24) who added 91 for the first wicket.

The right-handed Thomas who made 93 and is captain of the defending champions, showed grit and determination in his innings as he faced 119 balls, striking 15 fours.

Thomas also added an important 65 for the third wicket with Brandon King who contributed 21.

He was eventually dismissed stumped by Brian Christmas off left-arm spinner Justin Joseph’s bowling, seven short of a well deserved hundred.

Towards the end of the innings, Marquino Mindley (43) and Fabian Allen (23) featured in a seventh wicket stand of 64 with some bold and lusty hitting.

Joseph (3-36), Mohan (3-45) and left-arm spinner Jovan Ali (3-50), all captured three wickets apiece.

When T&T batted, only opener Jeremy Solozano with 50 off 89 balls with four fours and impressive all-rounder Brian Christmas (30) offered resistance to the well-oiled Jamaican bowling attack headed by left-arm orthodox spinner Allen who bagged four for 23 off nine overs.

In the bottom-of-the-table clash at Kennedy Park, the Windward Islands gained their first points of the tournament, when they defeated the Leeward Islands by seven wickets.

The Leewards, asked to bat first, were bundled out for a paltry 67 off 27 overs and the Windwards then romped to victory in 29.4 overs.

Heading into the final round, Guyana have eight points while T&T and Jamaica both have six. All three could all still end on eight points.
