Wisburg Secondary wins second annual `Screw’ Richmond football tournament

Wisburg Secondary School defeated Christianburg Wismar Secondary School 1-0 in the final of the second annual Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial football tournament Friday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.

The goal was scored in the 50th minute by Gary Gomes from a pass by Michael Wilson.

The final was witnessed by the New York-based representatives of the Edward ‘Screw‘Richmond Foundation namely  President Ernest Joseph,  First Vice President Sammy Griffith and Board Members Compton London and Richard Thompson.

The third place game was won by Mackenzie High School which defeated Linden Foundation Secondary 1-0 in overtime.

Prior to the final Joseph declared:”We are committed to this foundation. We are going to be working very hard in the coming years to make this foundation and this tournament the biggest and best you’ll ever see.”

Wisburg Secondary players dominated the presentation which took place immediately afterwards.

Those receiving awards were Leonard Wilson, Best Goalkeeper, Michael Wilson, Best Midfielder, Kevin Spencer, Best Defender and Shawn Allicock, Most Valuable Player.

Coach Bevon McCalmon received the ‘Screw’ Richmond Trophy on behalf of the school while Allicock collected the Malcom ‘Mali’ Cummings Memorial Trophy from Ernest Joseph.

The trophy was donated by the Cummings family in the memory of the former national youth player.

The tournament was organized by the Education Department of Region 10 in collaboration with the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation and was held in the memory of Richmond who was the first player from Linden to play for the Guyana senior football team.
