Staff crumbles to Social Sciences in Inter-Faculty B/ball

Following the Faculty of Health Sciences walkover victory against the Faculty of Education and Humanities, the Staff team of the University of Guyana (UG) crumbled at the hands of the Faculty of Social Sciences when the two teams met in the UG Inter-Faculty Basketball tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday.

The Social Sciences team, which included the skilled female netball, volleyball and basketball national player Michelle Subrattie and other recognized club players, made no mistake in delivering a 23 points trouncing to the staff when the game ended 72-49.

Social Sciences were ready from day one and turned up on the first day for the opening game of the tournament fired up and ready to deliver the goods on the basketball court, only to have the victory handed to them on a platter after the Education and Humanities team didn’t show up.

This time, however, they seized the opportunity and took the win after taking it to the Staff minutes into the game leaving their opponents mostly trailing on the scoreboard in the first half. After applying more pressure in the second half, Social Sciences began to outrun the tiring Staff side and vastly increased the margin of difference with the help of Jason Cort, who took advantage of some good looks around the perimeter and top scored for his team with 20 points.

As Social Sciences continued dropping shots and netting lay ups, the chances of the Staff making a comeback decreased with the time on the clock and finally expired even with some resistance from the Staff’s Gilbert Caleb who scored most of the team’s points by netting 21.

Other notable performances came from Social Sciences Kiev Chesney, who rocked the baskets with some fast break dunks as he went on to total 14 points and Marvin Wray who played well on the inside for his nine points.

Meanwhile the faculty of Natural Sciences garnered an easy 14-point win over  the faculty of Agriculture Science on Tuesday at the same venue.

The defending champions, Natural Sciences, won by 60 points to 46 although they missed a lot of scoring opportunities.

Natural Sciences Samuel Thompson poured in 17 points while Hugh Arthur and Styron Obermuller added 12 and 10 points respectively.

On the other half of the court, Ryan Dev was the only player from the Agriculture Science Faculty to reach double figures with the game high 22 points.

With the absence of the teams from the Faculty of Education and Humanities and the Berbice Campus, the fixtures for the Inter- Faculty Basketball are in the process of being revised and the competition will continue on Monday.  The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be unavailable for the hosting of the competition until that time.
