GCA holds captains workshop during break in cricket season

The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) is making hay in the rainy season through workshops which will be held during the current break in cricket as part of a number of developmental programmes on the association’s agenda, beginning with a Captains workshop at the Everest Cricket Club yesterday.

This was related to Stabroek Sport by the President of the GCA, former West Indies all-rounder and facilitator of the workshop, Roger Harper, via telephone yesterday.

Harper emphasized that the GCA is focusing on equipping local captains and coaches with the necessary technical expertise as it relates to the game through these programmes.

“We have scheduled a number of workshops in an effort to enlighten, educate and inform captains and coaches,” Harper stated.

He also  noted that the association will be making full use of the rainy season.
“Now we’re in the rainy season we’re looking to stage a lot of workshops,” he said.
Harper pointed out that after the inclement weather has ended, developmental clinics and camps will be held for local cricketers, and this is scheduled for  July-August.

Harper also pointed out that he cannot give the exact date of the next workshop because the GCA is currently looking at getting facilities available for the hosting of another. However he said “Another workshop will commence soon.”

Also speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday was co-facilitator of the workshop, Mark Harper who reiterated that the workshop is part of GCA’s initiative towards cricket development.

He added that yesterday’s workshop was focused on delivering fitness and skill techniques and programmes which players can go back and work with so they are  not idle during this time.

He observed also that one of the aims of the workshop is “to give captains and coaches information and programmes to keep players going during this period,” while there’s a break in the season due to the inclement weather.

Also commenting on the workshop yesterday was former national player Neil Barry who also aided the facilitators and made an input during the planning stages.

He said that emphasis will be placed on team design and team selection during the workshops. Moreover,  the facilitators will touch on the process of setting up a team, the role of a captain, tactics and strategies on the field during the season and in the pre-season.
