Baker, Tonge revive Windies-A

CARDIFF, Wales,  CMC – Steady bowling from Lionel Baker and Gavin Tonge helped West Indies-A fight back, after they conceded a healthy first innings lead in their three-day, tour match against Glamorgan yesterday.

Baker captured two wickets for 18 runs from 13 overs, and Tonge took two for 38 from 14 overs, as Glamorgan, leading by 110 on first innings, reached 126 for six in their second innings at the close on the second day of the match at Sophia Gardens.

The revival for the A-Team started, after they had been dismissed for 151 in their first innings between lunch and tea.

Chadwick Walton hit the top score of 34 for the visitors, and all-rounder Imran Khan made 33, after the A-Team wobbled to 76 for six at lunch.

Walton and Khan added 68 for the seventh wicket before the A-Team lost their last four wickets for 30 runs in the space of 29 balls.

Former England international Robert Croft was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers with four wickets for 39 runs from 10.3 overs of his off-spin.

Chris Ashling supported with three for 18 from 10 overs, and Will Owen collected three for 65 from 14 overs.

West Indies-A then rocked Glamorgan, when Tonge trapped opener Gareth Rees for an 18-ball duck, and Imran Khan’s direct hit at the bowler’s end ran Willian Bragg out for a 12-ball duck to leave the home team on seven for two.

The visitors tightened their grip, when Baker gained successive lbw verdicts to dismiss Glamorgan captain Tom Maynard for 21, and Mike Powell for a first-ball duck to leave the hosts tottering at 31 for four at tea.

After the break, Tonge trapped Ben Wright lbw for nine, and Imran Khan removed David Brown for 15, as Glamorgan slumped to 76 for six.

But West Indies-A had limited success in the remaining time before the close, as Nick James with 36 not out and Croft with 33 not out stabilised their side’s innings with an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 50.
