Alves wins in welcome return to lawn tennis

Adam Alves made a welcome return to lawn tennis when he defeated seasoned player Gilbert Barckoy in a veterans match on Saturday in the GBTI Open Tennis Tournament continued at the GBTI Sports Club courts, Bel Air Park.

The former top junior player who dropped the first set 0-6, delivered some booming first serves and ground strokes that proved too much for Barckoy as he took the next two sets 6 – 4, 6 – 4.

Meanwhile, in the other men’s singles of the day Kijana Lewis, brother of former national open champion Diwani Lewis,  was in fine form playing an attractive game against veteran player Arnold Madromootoo who seemed able to retrieve just about everything. The match inevitably lasted for more than two hours before Lewis prevailed 7 – 5, 6 – 4.

In the men’s doubles, Sandeep Chand and Andre Lopes uprooted Robert Mansell and Ryan Van Sluytman 6-0 6-2 while Thi Fernandes and Carol Humphrey defeated Grace Mc Calman and Tanya Niamatali 6-2 7-5 in a women’s doubles encounter.

In the second ladies doubles a collaboration between Nicola Ramdyhan and Krystal Sukra dominated the pair of Abigail Welch and Aretta Dey 6-1 6-1.
