Edghill captures five titles as NSC Independence TT competition ends

Caribbean Under-13 girls singles champion Chelsea Edghill waltzed off with five titles when the Annual National Sports Commission Independence Table Tennis Tournament ended Monday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

And, in a men’s singles field missing most of the top players, Paul Meusa returned from a brief hiatus to snatch the crown from former national junior player Jonathan Sankar in the latter’s first tournament since returning from studies abroad.

However, this year’s tournament undoubtedly belonged to the Bishops’ High School first form student who swept the three singles titles U-13, U-15 and U-18 and was knocked out by eventual champion Nathalie Cummings in the semi-finals of the women’s singles.

Edghill added the women’s doubles with Cummings and the junior mixed doubles with Nigel Bryan.

In the senior mixed doubles category Trenace Lowe and Edinho Lewis defeated Adielle Rosheuvel and Joel Alleyne 11-7, 11-8 and 11-6 in the final.

Third place went to Nigel Bryan and Chelsea Edghill who came from being 2-1 down to win their third place game against Natalie Cummings and Dwayne Gibson at 11-3, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, and 11-3.

In the men’s singles finals Meusa overcame Sankar 13-11, 11-7, and 11-5 while the “C” class open was won by Xenophen Goliath who defeated Samuel Fraser 12-10, 11-8, and 11-5.

Meanwhile, Alleyne won the “B” class Open final defeating Edinho Lewis 4-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8.

Third place went to Orin Hickerson who defeated Gibson 11-8, 11-5, and 11-8.

In the women’s singles final Cummings got past

Rosheuvel 16-14, 11-7, 9-11, and 11-7.

Akeicia Nedd snatched third place after defeating

Edgill in their third place encounter.

The presentation of prizes will be on Friday from 16:00 hours at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
